Employees come with all different skills and backgrounds, and just like students in grade school, different learning styles. When you are running a training program for a group of employees, it can greatly increase effectiveness if you use different methods to address these different learning styles.

Most adults prefer to be self-directed, want to learn, and need the opportunity to reflect on and experience what they are learning. Managers who allow trainees to have input on shaping their learning experience will see better outcomes. In addition, providing a learning experience that aims to incorporate different learning styles will have results that stick.

The six learning styles for adults that are preferred are: visual, aural, print, tactile, interactive, and kinesthetic. Visual learners need to see something to “get a picture” of what they are learning. Aural learners actually need to hear something, so possibly reading aloud when something is written can reach these learners best. Print learners succeed when they can write something down, take notes, and process information in that way. Tactile learners need to have a hands-on experience to integrate the training. Interactive learners like to discuss, so question and answer sessions are helpful with these learners. And kinesthetic learners need a chance to move—so actual role playing and other methods can work best for these trainees.
