Day 1: Mastering HR Fundamentals
12:00 p.m. – 12:05 p.m.
Speaker Introduction and Opening Remarks
12:05 p.m. – 1:05 p.m.
Getting Started & Leveraging HR
When you are an HR department of one, you have to be jack-of-all-trades, involved in hiring, resource allocation, compensation, benefits, compliance with laws affecting employees and the workplace, and safety and health issues all with the utmost ethical standards. If you are new to HR, you should quickly learn HR jargon and develop a network of people and resources that you can turn to when you have questions or problems.
If you want to be a real partner in your company’s business and have input into the strategic planning process, you’ll need to leverage your position. That means assuming responsibility for all people-related performance issues, as well as for the HR mainstays of pay and paperwork.
This session will cover how you can access the resources you need, align the HR agenda with your company’s standards, and establish credibility and influence, as well as how to “sell” your competencies and capabilities to the C-Suite and HR’s customers (employees, supervisors, and management).

BREAK
1:15 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.
Learn Your Organization & Build Partnerships
One of the most important things you can do as a solo HR practitioner is learn the organization you’re in, from bottom to top and edge to edge. An excellent exercise for a new solo HR manager is to conduct an HR audit. This is basically an investigation of your organization’s current practices, policies, and procedures. Once you are familiar with the organization, it’s time to build deeper, stronger relationships. HR is the communications link between all departments, so it is essential that you develop productive relationships with managers from every sector. But it’s not enough to get management on board with your program—you must have the support of employees. This session will discuss types of audits you can do, steps you can take to learn about the people, processes, and products that are essential in your organization, and tips for building strong relationships with both managers and employees.
1:45 p.m. – 2:15 p.m.
Setting Priorities
As a human resources department of one, your success will stem from your ability to plan effectively for your organization’s short-term, midrange, and long-term priorities. Strategic planning determines where an organization is going over the next several years, how it’s going to get there, and how it will know if it got there or not. With your strategic plan, you are committing to paper a definition of your department’s goals and the steps you will take to achieve them. This session includes information on all the critical HR areas that factor into your department’s strategic plan.
