Machine Guarding: How To Assess – and Reduce – the Hazards at Your Facility

Machine Guarding Webinar Recording

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 171 fatal workplace amputations and nearly 88,500 nonfatal workplace amputations over just an 8-year period in the 1990s.

The costs to both employers and employees of these accidents are staggering – tragic loss of life and loss of limbs, tremendous increases in workers’ comp premiums, decreased morale and productivity…the list goes on.

But how do you effectively address this problem? Oftentimes workers deliberately remove or otherwise work around the very guards that are meant to protect them – and sometimes the guards are missing or damaged.

Join us for a webinar all about effectively protecting your workers from machine guarding hazards

You’ll learn:

  • The federal regulations and consensus standards that address machine guarding requirements
  • Machine guarding best practices that can help improve your existing program
  • How to identify – and rectify - typical machine guarding hazards, including in-running nip points, rotating motion, reciprocating motion, transverse motion, and cutting and punching hazards
  • Basic strategies for machine safeguarding, including guards, devices, location/distance, feeding and ejection methods, awareness barriers, and hand-feeding tools
  • Who should be involved in strategy selection and implementation, including operations, engineering, maintenance, and safety staff
  • Requirements for assessing the adequacy of possible safeguarding solutions
  • Why a formal maintenance program is critical to continued success of a machine safeguard program
  • How to implement an effective machine guarding inspection program – and why this is such a crucial component of any program
  • How to develop and implement the training and procedures, such as JSAs, necessary for your machine guarding program
  • Strategies for disciplining employees and supervisors who circumvent the safeguards.
